Blount County Fire Protection District offers several programs to the community to train and raise awareness for fire safety. These programs are offered free of charge to community schools, churches, civic organizations, and businesses.
Programs for schools: In-class demonstrations and instruction: Blount County Fire Protection District offers in-class programs for grades K-12. A program that is suitable for the age group will be selected and scheduled with the class teacher.
For an outdoor event, Blount County Fire Protection District will bring a fire truck or trucks (time permit-able along with firefighters to demonstrate the equipment and familiarize the youth with the daily duties of firefighting personnel. We also offer the home safety trailer, a prop designed to simulate a child's home environment as we instruct the child what to do when smoke is present (with live theatrical smoke).
In-Station Demonstrations: Same as outdoor demonstrations, but we will host your group on a visit to your local fire station.
Hear-the-Beep: Several years ago Blount County Fire Protection District started a program for teachers called "Hear-the-Beep". This program is conducted by the teacher and allows the students to perform a community service. The program is most commonly presented as a "voluntary" homework assignment that will earn the student an extra credit incentive to complete.
Hear-the-Beep works like this: The student is given a form where they fill in five names and telephone numbers. The student calls each of these households and informs the party that they are working on a school assignment, and need their help to complete the assignment. The only thing the called party needs to do to help is to test their fire/smoke detector while the student is on the phone with them. The student wants to "hear-the-beep". If the beep is not heard, the student needs to fill in on the form the reason why (ie; dead battery, no detector in the home or faulty detector). When the forms are turned in to the teacher, he or she will forward the forms that did not "hear-the-beep" to the Blount County Fire Protection District. We will give a courtesy call to the resident to ask if we can assist in making sure the home has a working smoke alarm. The "Hear-the-beep" program has alerted countless homes that they need to give attention to their alarm's working condition. Blount County Fire Protection District would like to thank all of the students and teachers that have participated in this program. You never know, but that simple effort by the child to "hear-the-beep" could possibly save a life.
Programs for churches, civic organizations and businesses: Blount County Fire Protection District offers several programs for area churches, civic organizations and businesses. Programs include, but not limited to; Fire Extinguisher Training, Fire Evacuation Training, and Pre-plans.
Fire Extinguisher Training: We will instruct you on the proper selection and use of various fire extinguishers. We will instruct you on what types of extinguishers to use on different type fires and how.
Fire Evacuation Training: We will assist your organization in developing a fire evacuation plan, and will assist in conducting a fire evacuation drill.
Pre-Plans: One of the most important services we offer for your commercial property is a "Pre-Plan". Pre-plans consist of BCFPD personnel visiting your property to conduct a survey of the building construction, contents, locations of key components such as water, gas, and sprinkler valves, and proximity to other structures that could be threatened in the event of fire.
The pre-plan information is entered into our system, including drawings and photographs of your property that will assist us in performing our jobs in the event of fire at your location. The pre-plan not only gives us valuable information that will assist us in dealing with the event, but also gives us information that will improve the safety of our responding personnel.
To schedule a pre-plan or other training, please complete the PR Request Form.
